Originally, women in England and Wales could terminate pregnancies up to 24 weeks and with the consent of two doctors. Terminating a pregnancy after that could be criminalised under Victorian law, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. In the UK, criminal convictions for breaking such laws are rare, but the number of prosecutions has increased after the Covid-19 pandemic, which changed the law to allow at-home abortions up to 10 weeks into the pregnancy.
